Sam is a fisheries-focused research analyst at McKinley Research Group. He developed expertise in Alaska fisheries over 10 years as a journalist in Alaska — first at the Kodiak Daily Mirror and later as the outdoors editor at the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. In his wide-ranging career as a journalist he also reported on subjects including PFAS water contamination, military base closures, and the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race. He’s passionate about using stories and data visualizations to explain Alaska and its economy.
Sam left Alaska for Burlington, Vermont in 2019. He worked as a freelance reporter and grocery store fishmonger before joining the McKinley Research Group team in 2021.
Sam is an active civic hacker in the local Vermont chapter of Code for America. In his free time he loves skiing, kayaking, open water swimming, and getting out with his retired sled dog.
