Joining the firm in 2015, Dan serves as lead analyst or project manager for a variety of McDowell Group projects, including feasibility studies, survey research, and economic development studies. Recent projects include the Economic Impacts of Locally-Grown Produce in Southeast Alaska; Southeast Alaska Cluster Initiative Program Assessment; Southeast Energy Profile and Update (for the Alaska Energy Authority); Port MacKenzie Rail Freight Market Analysis; Juneau Visitor Profile and Economic Impacts; and Downtown Juneau Development Assessment (for Avista Corporation).
A lifelong Alaskan with a broad perspective of the state’s natural resource and visitor industries, Dan’s professional experience includes analyzing natural resource policy as a legislative analyst for the Alaska Legislature; operating his family’s award-winning business, the Gustavus Inn; commercial fishing; serving on the Gustavus City Council; and developing and implementing the renewable energy program at a regional non-profit organization.
Dan brings skills in data science and data visualization to his work at McDowell Group. He has analyzed large, raw datasets for several recent market research projects including transaction data from the Alaska Marine Highway, hospital emergency department utilization data, and University of Alaska student records. Dan is certified as a Tableau Desktop Qualified Associate, and has built interactive dashboards for a variety of clients including thread.org, Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, United Way of Southeast Alaska, and Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (in progress).
Dan holds a bachelor’s in Biology and Environmental Studies from Grinnell College in Iowa, and is currently enrolled in an MBA program through the University of Illinois.
