Joining the firm in 2015, Dan serves as project manager for a variety of McDowell Group’s fisheries, visitor industry, and natural resources studies. Recent projects include the Wholesale Market Profiles for Alaska Groundfish and Crab Fisheries, Economic Impact of Alaska’s Salmon Hatcheries; Juneau Visitor Profile and Economic Impacts; and Port MacKenzie Rail Freight Market Analysis.
A lifelong Alaskan, Dan’s professional experience includes researching public policy as a legislative analyst for the Alaska Legislature; operating his family’s award-winning business, the Gustavus Inn; commercial fishing; serving on the Gustavus City Council; and developing and implementing the renewable energy program at a regional non-profit organization.
Dan completed his undergraduate education at Grinnell College in Biology and Environmental Studies and is currently completing an MBA program through the University of Illinois, with a focus on Business Analytics.
Dan’s passion for data analysis and visualization is infectious. He is proficient in R, Tableau (certified associate), ArcGIS, and other tools. Recent data-intensive projects involved transaction data from the Alaska Marine Highway; emergency room visitation and diagnosis data from a regional hospital; linking University of Alaska student records with survey data; and online data dashboard development for various clients.
